Creative Writing on the Web

5 Tips for Generating Fresh SEO Content

Creating fresh search engine optimized content on a regular basis is one of the tried and true methods of establishing a successful online presence. Update your content consistently over a long period of time to build trust with the search engines by displaying your commitment to creating a useful website.

However, it can be difficult to generate SEO content ideas when you feel like you’ve exhausted all possible subjects for articles. What follows is a list of 5 ideas you can use to get the creative juices flowing for your web content.

  1. Read Other Blogs- Looking at other blogs in your niche can help you get an idea of what to create content about. Your goal shouldn’t be to copy exactly what the competition is saying, but these blogs can be a starting point for your new article. You can provide a new spin on the subject, or you can even write about an aspect of it the blogger overlooked.
  2. Look at Google Trends- Google Trends can help you see what the latest search trends are for your industry. This tool shows the most searched items for the day. By studying this, you can provide timely, relevant content users are searching for. Most of the time these sudden spikes in search volume are influenced by industry events or breaking news, so it often provides ideas for a topic you’ve never written about.
  3. Review Your Comments- If you have a blog, consider taking a moment to browse through your past comments. Often you will find someone raised a point you can further explore in a future post. Listen to your readers and give them the content they desire. It will keep them coming back, and it will give you a steady stream of SEO content ideas.
  4. Use Keyword Suggestion Tools- One of the best ways to generate fresh, optimized content is to use a keyword research tool to find new key phrases for you to target. The Google Adwords tool is one of the most popular around because it’s free and it suggests loads of keyword ideas. Browse through the keyword suggestions to find terms you can create content around. Simply seeing a the keyword might spark an idea for an article.
  5. Browse a Question and Answer Page- Lately, a hot internet trend has been the use of question and answer websites. At the most basic level, these websites are avenues of information where users ask questions for the community to answer. You can use WikiAnswers or Yahoo! Answers to gauge what topics are hot in your industry. Once you find a question relevant to your niche, you can create an article answering this question. Then, you can give links to your article in the answers section on these websites, earning yourself an inbound link.

Yeah thanks for the list.

But I’ve never used Google Trends, so are you just typing in a word or a phrase, and then looking for how the trend is for that exact word?
And if you do, how is that generating ideas?

Multi- you can type in phrases to see what the trend is for that word, but what I was referring to was is the daily list of words experiencing a sudden spike in search volume. I belive it’s called the “hot trends” Looking at that list will give you an idea of some recent happenings causing people to search and hopefully some ideas for content.

Ahh now I see it. I was just too fast. It’s on the frontpage of Google Trends under the formular right?
The “Today’s Hot Trends” :D

Thanks for the quick answer…

Yep, that’s it. And I believe you can expand that list of 10 into 100 if you click the “more” tab.

Thanks for reading and commenting. I really appreciate it!

Good post of actually true SEO tactics. Fewer and fewer exist every day.

People forget about their own site and the content within it. Search engine’s main objective is to generate lists of sites that prove beneficial to their users. The extent of their placement algorithms far out-weigh the bogus tactics people are preaching.

Content is key, and will be more beneficial than 1,000,000 backlinks and directory submissions. Focus more on your content and keywords. Be patient and research.

I listen to podcasts as well to get ideas. Also, a trip to the magazine section of the local bookstore is always helpful. If all else fails, go over to Yahoo Answers and see what people are asking questions about.

That’s great advice Terry.
I’m doing something similar and make quick notes on a ‘to post’ list including URL’s. If in need of a great article, I’ll go back to re-read and study the topic.

I do a lot of it for people with specified keywords and products or programs. At first its always fun, but it does get tougher as the contract period extends. Nice ideas and appreciated!

I know from experience, working in many niches, that it can be difficult to come up with fresh content that’s worthy - and on a regular basis. I like point 5 because scribd.com and hubpages.com can be a good source for quality content and inspiration.

Fresh content is nice, but I’m sorry most things on the net these days are same old same old. Same content different day, just reorganized cause Google likes it fresh.

Thank you, Eric. Good advices. I started to use Google Trends not long ago but alredy understand what profit it can bring for me. Google create really usefull services.

Thanks for everyone who commented. It really is challenging to come up with new content on a regular basis that isnt some regurgitated subject we’ve all talked about a million times. Richard does bring up a good point about how too many people post the same thing over and over just because Google likes it freash. However, I think the readers of the blog will punish the blogger if they see them doing that by not commenting/unsubscribing/ and not reading their blog anymore.

What is the purpose of driving more traffic to your blog. Simply writing ‘content’ for the sake of bringing more eyes to a site is not the reason.
If it is to promote the advertising on the site then this is the objective, if it is to sign members and sell their data to some data mining operation then this is the objective.

Each objective should have a different approach required to get the right type of eyeballs on your site.

21 Eric Brantner { 07.10.08 at 1:51 pm }

Olmec- agreed there are different reasons for blogging and each does require a unique approach. However, I think one important aspect of blogging, regardless of your goal, is building relationships and trust. Without that, people wont click on your ads, become a member, buy your products, or whatever else you want them to do. One way to build their trust is to produce relevant, quality content on a consistent basis. You are right- no one should publish content just for the hell of it. Your content always has a deeper purpose beyond bringing people to your site, and you must keep that in mind when writing.

Thanks for the comment.

I am looking for new ideas for original content all time. And many times I felt like - what can I say about this subject? - the same old discussion again. You gave me 2 ideas - 3 and 5 are new ideas for me, where to find some points for what people look for and what it will be interesting to write about. Thanks.

26 Kondiment { 08.14.08 at 5:38 am }

I was reading today another post and someone - instead of giving original ideas about what to write, was writing about using Google Translate to rewrite your own content in different languages. Not stupid, but not original. I like your ideas - are original.

27 RoWeb Design { 08.14.08 at 1:43 pm }

You are right about creating fresh content. The problem is originality. It is quite difficult to find new original ideas to write about. Your idea of reading Q/A pages is very good. Another way to find new content is to talk to your friends, clients, people around us. Because they have a lot of questions and doubts, maybe you can answer at them in your posts. Usually the clients ask a lot of unexpected questions and it is good to write about them, probably other people have the same questions too.
