104 Ways To Get Backlinks | Mega Backlink Guide

Building backlinks to your blog/site is crucial in achieving, maintaining, and improving your search engine rankings. If you don’t already know, a backlink to your site is like a vote. Not all votes are equal, and the same rings true for Backlinks, but we can all agree that attaining more Backlinks (healthy ones) is a key integral part of your website and it’s rankings. Having said that, the question I get the most, and one I see often asked in forums and other SEO blogs is, “How can I get more backlinks?”. While some of us may take it for granted the fact that getting backlinks is easy as pie – most new webmasters and bloggers are still overwhelmed with the fact that not only do they have continually add fresh content, but they also have to work on getting more backlinks! Below is a list that I put together that is more of a brainstorm session than anything – and keep in mind, some of these methods are ways of getting more exposure for your site that have the possibility of leading to links. I hope you find it useful, and if I forgot anything, feel free to leave it in the comments.
104 Ways To Get Backlinks:
- Create viral linkbait.
- Write and give away a free ebook.
- Write a pillar (authority) article.
- Create a numbers list (10 ways to xxx, 20 different xxxx).
- Hold a contest, and require that they link back to you for an entry.
- Send off interview templates to big bloggers, and post up completed interviews.
- Create a Wordpress plugin.
- Design a hot Wordpress theme, and distribute it for free, requiring they keep your link in the footer.
- Create controversy (be careful and don’t get into something you can’t handle)
- Find a scammer/shady website or blogger, and make the world known about it.
- Submit a press release about your new product or news.
- Submit your site to free directories (careful, only SEO friendly ones)
- Submit your site to paid directories (dmoz(kidding!), yahoo, alive)
- Submit articles to article directories.
- Submit posts to blog carnivals.
- Email a webmaster, and ask for a link.
- Offer to buy a one way link from another relevant website (keep this on the DL)
- Send unsolicited, yet awesome articles to other bloggers to reference or post
- Let your networked friends know that you’ll do reviews and testimonials.
- Buy reviews on pay-per-post or a similar service.
- Get on the Digg front page (and watch your server melt).
- Exchange Stumbles on popular webmaster forums.
- Submit to Del.icio.us
- Answer a question on Yahoo Answers and reference your site.
- Pick a hot ebook or software program and review it for free.
- If you get paid for a review – make it a great one, and you’ll get a link back.
- Don’t be afraid to link out – share the link love (just don’t get too spammy)
- Be the first to report breaking news (hard, but very effective)
- Review a semi-popular tech gadget.
- Review stuff on Amazon, and put your link in your profile
- Create a Linked-In page, and make sure to put your link on it.
- Speaking of that, do the same for Facebook, Myspace, and others..
- Hire good writers to pump out quality content.
- Join all applicable Chamber of Commerce’s’ in your area for free links
- Join the BBB (Better Business Bureau) for a free link.
- Post a bulletin in your Myspace account about your new site.
- Throw a relevant link in a Craigslist ad.
- Create your own SEO tool.
- Buy TV air time on a small station flashing your URL.
- Buy Radio time for a short commercial spamming your URL.
- Put bumper stickers on your car with your link on it.
- Look for older, higher PR sites with Guestbooks, and sign them! Easy links.
- Comment on Do-Follow blogs (meaning the link in your comment will be followed by a spider)
- Post your link in forums, and your forum signature.
- Don’t forget to link from some of your older, more established sites.
- Buy post level links from other bloggers/webmasters. (usually cheap)
- Don’t be afraid to ask for links, you just never know!
- Do pro-bono work for a non-profit, and they may link to you.
- Offer to be a guest blogger or regular contributor on a bigger blog.
- Apply to about.com for a topic that you can write about.
- Sell items on ebay and agree to donate proceeds to charity – they will link to you.
- Hire someone from a webmaster forum to submit links for you.
- Trade articles with industry related webmasters
- Rewrite old content they may have been buried to fast…breath new life.
- Find out about getting a link on your local libraries website.
- Launch an affiliate program for your site, ebook, or product.
- Technorati tag all of your posts for good Technorati exposure.
- Take advantage of “old world media” (newspapers, magazines)
- Rent links from Text-Link-Ads or similar service (careful with this one!)
- If you have the ability, create a Firefox extension and release it.
- Answer questions on Google Groups and link if necessary.
- Call in to a radio show and shamelessly plug your site!
- A good PPC campaign can draw exposure which could = links.
- Head over to the slums (chat rooms) and mention your site if appropriate.
- Create a controversial political cartoon and get it some attention.
- Most local Fox sites have a blogging community you can tap into.
- Hire someone to do everything in this list. Outsourcing is cheap and fun.
- Get business cards, and distribute the hell out of them for exposure.
- Drop your link on Xbox live.
- Mention your link when you’re playing online PC games.
- Donate a larger sum of money to a small charity in exchange for a link.
- If you’re in school, put your link on your college website (even sneak it in for a free .edu backlink – lol)
- If you have family friendly content, get a link from your Church’s website.
- Set up a Squidoo lens with good content, and link to your site from it.
- Sponsor an event or a big contest – trust me, lots of link love there.
- Enter all the group writing projects you can find – good links.
- Start a community helpful website, and get on the local news – they love it.
- Submit to RSS feed sites – hopefully they’ll link back.
- Make sure to take advantage of trackbacks when linking out to other blogs.
- Set up an award system on your site, and have readers vote on best site.
- Speaking of that, enter all the award sites you can.
- Make a super crazy viral type video, and get it on Youtube.
- Start a podcasting series, and build an audience, they’ll link to you.
- Write a heavily opinionated piece to get people talking.
- Retain a real linkbaiting service. (There are a few out there, but $$$)
- Hire an actual real life publicist for your site (if you can justify it)
- Help with an up and coming web 2.0 project for more exposure.
- Start a content writing service website, and have clients link to you for a discount.
- Crack the top 100 in Technorati, or create the largest MyBlogLog community.
- Go old school and trade links with other relevant sites.
- Check who links to your competitors, and get links from them!
- Provide a sexy “link to me” button or banner, and people will use it, for real.
- Create a good Facebook app, and if it’s really good, the links will pour in.
- Review bands, local restaurants, and small shops and get links on their sites in return for the exposure.
- Speaking of that, sponsor a hot local band’s show one night with big flashy banners with your link on it (in the background)
- When Hannah Montana comes to town, buy up some tickets, offer them on your site as prizes. Local news stations and papers will eat it up alive.
- Sue Yahoo, Google, or whoever, and you’ll get plenty of publicity – lol
- Answer all of your emails promptly and professionally. People love that, and will link to you and let everyone know how swell you are.
- Create a thorough walk through on a game or even an electronic device. People love that stuff!
- Network with like-minded individuals offline. Talk to them about tossing your link up on their site.
- Write about the hottest celebrities, and make it unique. People love Hollywood.
- Create your own Wiki page (it’s nofollow, but could lead to natural links)
- Create your own training program for your field of interest.
- Offer an on-page language translator to reach out to other countries, which can lead to new links
There you have it! I’m sure more will be added in the future, but following the 104 examples above should keep you busy for a while. Wouldn’t it be really cool if someone actually did all 104 things – talk about linkbait city…..

As far as traffic and stats - well, I’m kind of a seasoned vet, and I know how to use social bookmarking/networking to my advantage. Stay tuned for an upcoming post on that.
I haven’t ran any PPC, and until you pointed it out, I didn’t even know I was on the top commentators list over there - it only sends me about 30 visitors or so a day, but it’s better than nothing.

i am in internet marketing and will use these tips myself as well as pass them on to my clients!
Remember that backlinks affect pagerank in a reverse logarithmic scale. This means that 1 backlink will get you a pagerank of 1, 10 backlinks for pagerank 2 and 100 backlinks for pagerank 3. (These numbers are approximate and depend on other factors such as the pagerank of the page the link is on)
Some of the tips above are good for one link, some of them are good for ten links and some a good for thousands.
Adding a link in your signature on a forum is good for a couple of hundred, emailing another blogger will probably get you one for every ten emails you send out, creating your own Wordpress plugin could get you anywhere between 1 and 100,000 depending on how popular it gets. This goes for Facebook plugins and groups as well.
Commenting on blogs rarely gets you a good backlink as it is usually accompanied by a rel=nofollow but this kind of link is still good for traffic, and traffic is what you really want in the end.
Traffic can also breed more traffic. Some widgets such as MyBlogLog keep a track of where their members visit and create backlinks to your blog every time a member visits you while you have the widget installed. Every time someone thumbs-up your page using StumbleUpon it creates a backlink in that user’s StumbleUpon page.
Mostly good - however I would be VERY CONCERNED about doing these:
Buy reviews on pay-per-post or a similar service.BLACK HAT ALERT!!Do this at your own risk. Having worked freelance for many years, I know the kind of crap content you can expect to get from these services. It may work for a while, but when users and search engines find out,(and they already have this on their radar)you could be causing yourself a giant headache and some really bad PR problems. NEVER write a false criticism of your competition if you are an actual business or working for a client who want this done. I cannot stress this strongly enough. It will bite you in the *ss sooner or later. There is a great post on SEOMOZ about this.
Enter all the award sites you can.
only if you’re a web design company and it’s for your site. Otherwise the content will just water down the relevance of the site it’s linking to. It may help a “little” but I wouldn’t waste my time with it.

I highly recommend uploading your articles to websites that offer content, so other people can copy your article (and link) and put it on their website, thus generating more backlinks without you asking for them!

This is an amazing list… I have been working on 50% of it in the past few weeks and with no results yet… I guess it takes time right?
So few questions;
how do you get to the front page of digg?
“Find a scammer/shady website or blogger, and make the world known about it. ” would you recommend doing it to a site from your industry? how would oyu let the world know? wouldn’t that just increase their page rank and make more people check them out?
Nir, there are alot of websites that explain how to get to the front page on alot of bookmarking websites including Digg by using some legit and shady techniques. But to me, i don’t think it’s worth it unless the page your trying to advertise is really worth having on the frontpage. Alot of these websites are starting to be more strict on moderation when it comes to what appears on the frontpage.
